He waits, hunched in his cloak against the bitter wind. It’s winter again, the snow comes falling down, not in gentle flakes either, but pounding against him as chips of ice. Remus sighs against it, watching his breath billow out, a momentary ghost, then tucks his hands back into his pockets. He can only just feel them, as they grow numb against the chill. His feet too are cold, losing feeling, even though he put on two pairs of socks before putting on his boots. Remus knows he ought to cast a warming spell over himself, at least, but he cannot bring himself to do it. The energy is lacking, the motivation gone. Locked in a cell in Azkaban, he thinks ruefully, but it will not do to dwell on Sirius for long. Black’s gone. Black, Remus thinks again, experimentally, unable to force Sirius’ memory from him. It clings, needing him as much as he needs it. Black. Sirius Black. Remus hears his own voice, inside his head, tossing out a casual “oi, Padfoot!” and he stops smiling and returns to fussing over his cloak.

Summary: The proper Potions tutor makes the lesson far more spicy
Genre: Friendship (developing), angst and slash
Setting: Marauders era, 6th or 7th year
Pairing: Severus Snape/Remus Lupin
Author's Note: This started out as a textual sketch of a possible Remus/Severus reconcilliation/friendship -- but it took on a life of its own and became something signficantly more smuttier. I've never ever written a fic where Remus didn't love Sirius Black one way or the other, and this shows up here just slightly, but I dismantled my OTP quite a bit with this piece...so if you're a Wolfstar, puppyshipper, etc fan like myself, please don't take offence to Severus' worldview and comments. It's accurate for his character, I think. ;)

Without a word to Harry, Ron and Hermione walked away. Harry saw Hermione approach Ginny, whose face was swollen and blotchy, and hug her. Ron joined Bill, Fleur, and Percy, who flung an arm around Ron’s shoulders. As Ginny and Hermione moved closer to the rest of the family, Harry had a clear view of the bodies lying next to Fred: Remus and Tonks, pale and still and peaceful-looking, apparently asleep beneath the dark, enchanted ceiling. -- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling (p. 661 American edition)

“I --”
Ron Weasley shook his head furiously, his hands balled into fists, the expression on his face mutinous. “What to you want, Malfoy?” he demanded harshly, jumping up from the place where he had been kneeling on the floor near the body of his dead brother, Fred. Every inch of his tall form was coiled and tense, ready to strike, and he pulled an ugly face as he glared at the pale blonde, still dressed in Slytherin finery, with only a small, circular burn mark on one cuff and a thin red scratch across his cheek to show for his time in battle. “Come to mock my family, huh?” Ron asked coldly. “Come to sneer at my dead brother, eh?”

"Wake up, Snivellus!"
James Potter leers, tossing a wad of parchment, which strikes the side of Severus' head before landing in his cauldron. The potion Severus spent the last two hours brewing, though carelessly, lost in dreams, is ruined. It smokes and a stench rises from the depths of his cauldron. Potter tips his chair back on two legs and laughs raucously. Beside him, Sirius' smirk is unbearable.
"Don't mind them," whispers Lily, glancing up from her own cauldron. She pats his hand. "They're idiots."
Then it is Severus' turn to smirk, as James goes beet red. The students file out of Slughorn's classroom, and Severus does not feel the weight of Slughorn's concerned stare, because as Lily takes his hand and pulls him down the corridor, all else ceases to exist.

They had taken Fleur hours ago, and Remus sat alone in the dismal cell, curled in the corner of a room that felt much too big. He thought of how cramped the little jail had seemed when he had first been dragged in by two brawny oafs in frightening masks and dark hoods. Nymphadora had been with him for the first few days, and Teddy. The baby had radiated a stiff sort of silence despite the cries of pain and fright from the other captives, and he had taken it as a favourable omen, hoping no tragedy would befall his small family. Once he had recovered enough from shock to look around, Remus had been horrified to see Charlie -- his favourite Weasley -- there among the prisoners. Now, he felt he would be grateful for the sight of a friendly face, no matter how bloodied.
